Walton Warriors earn four all draw in club’s first match

Walton Warriors FC made an encouraging start to life as a new football club by drawing four all in their first ever match.

Walton Warriors

The new Stone under nines side faced Florence Gold at Manor Hill First School on Sunday 19 July, less than three months after Walton Warriors was established.

The friendly provided the players with their first opportunity to take to the pitch together ahead of joining the North Staffs Junior Youth League in September.

Walton Warriors said the result was particularly encouraging against a Florence Gold under nines team now entering its third season.

The club praised the determination and teamwork shown by its players during the match, while families and supporters gathered on the touchline for the team’s first outing.

Walton Warriors chairman, manager and trainer Rich Draper said

“The support from local people has been huge and I’d like to thank everyone for all the kind words and help in getting this club set up and for also turning up to support us on our first outing.

“I hope you were all as proud of the boys as I was.”

The team’s red and white home kit was funded with support from Morgan Sindall Infrastructure, with the club thanking Sarah Saunders for helping to secure the funding.

Further support included a £100 donation from Kerry O’Sullivan, £250 from Clive and Dawn Draper and £200 from Stone Lions Club.

Rich said the backing from local people, businesses and organisations had played an important part in getting Walton Warriors ready for their opening match.

New players wanted

Walton Warriors are now looking for a goalkeeper and a small number of outfield players ahead of their first league season.

Places are open to children who will enter Year 4 in September, with experienced players and those who are new to football both welcome.

Training begins at Pirehill First School at 6pm on Tuesday 28 July and will continue each Tuesday evening.

Anyone interested in joining can email waltonwarriors1@outlook.com or call or text Rich on 07543 387674.

The club is also speaking to other teams about arranging further friendly matches, although none have yet been confirmed during the school holidays.
