Hundreds of knitted poppies for service

Barlaston
A knitted poppy wreath from last year – this year, members of Barlaston Herons WI are creating something much bigger!

Hundreds of knitted poppies will be ‘planted’ in the ground around Barlaston’s war memorial for the village’s Remebrance service on Sunday (9th November).

Members of Barlaston Herons WI have been inspired by the poppy tribute at the Tower of London.

Sara Morris from Barlaston Herons WI said: “We’ve yarn-bombed our village for the past few years. There has been a crocheted poppy wreath made by myself and left on a bench for people to admire for the whole year. This was taken down a few weeks ago to make way for this year’s plans.

“A lot of WI members and their families have been busy making either knitted or crocheted poppies by their hundreds. We currently have over 300 done and still expecting more before installation on Saturday evening.

We’ve taken inspiration from the London poppies and so all ours will be on sticks and placed amongst the grass around our village cenotaph ready for the service. They will hopefully be sold on Sunday, with all proceeds being split between The Royal British Legion and Help for Heroes.”
