A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: “The car had suffered very considerable damage. An off-duty policewoman from Cheshire and a lorry driver stopped at the scene and started basic life support on the woman. The ambulance crew took over and used their advanced life support skills.  The doctor also helped treat the woman.  Unfortunately, despite all of the efforts, it was not possible to save her and she was confirmed dead at the scene.

“The van driver, a man estimated to be in his 40s and thought to be from the local area, was immobilised using a neck collar and spinal board as a precaution. He was taken to the University Hospital North Staffordshire for further assessment and treatment.”

The road was closed for almost five hours and police are continuing to investigate the cause of the crash. Anyone with information should contact Staffordshire Police on 0300 123 4455.
