Work on the long-awaited Burston footbridge is still being planned for June, with Staffordshire County Council saying ground conditions at the site have improved.

The latest update largely confirms the position reported by ALBOS in April, with the permanent bridge already manufactured and ready for delivery once the site can be safely accessed.
The council says final construction plans, landowner access arrangements, Environment Agency licence conditions and ecological surveys still need to be completed before work can begin.
Footpath 36 between the River Trent and Burston Lane remains closed for safety reasons, and residents are being reminded not to move barriers or enter the closure area.
Sarah Bentley, Staffordshire County Council’s Head of Environment and Countryside, said
“It’s really encouraging to see conditions improving at the site, and we’re now getting close to the point where work can begin.
“We’re just finalising the necessary arrangements and completing the required checks to make sure everything is in place for a safe and smooth construction process.
“The new bridge is ready to go and, as soon as we have the necessary permissions in place, we’ll move ahead. We’re currently planning for work to start in June, dependant on the weather, and will keep the community updated.”
Once work begins, a temporary structure will be installed to support construction, allowing the permanent bridge to be fitted safely.
The footpath will reopen once the work is complete.
