Staffordshire’s emergency services are marking the centenary of the end of the First World War with two vehicles decorated with remembrance artwork.
The Joint Emergency Transport Service, which runs and maintains the fleets of vehicles for Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service and Staffordshire Police, has arranged for two Astra estate cars, one each for Fire and Police, to be decorated. They will be used in the run up to Sunday, November 11 where they will be on display at the National Arboretum in Alrewas during the Service of Remembrance.
Deputy Chief Fire Officer Rob Barber said: “We wanted to mark the centenary of the Armistice and I feel this is a very fitting tribute to all those who gave their lives in the First World War.
“There are no veterans left from that war now, so that makes it all the more important that we continue to acknowledge the selfless sacrifice they made for our country. Remembrance should be brought into everyday life so I hope that the vehicles serve as a reminder of this in the lead up to Sunday.”
Deputy Chief Constable Nick Baker said: “Out of the three police forces that made up what is now known as Staffordshire Police, we lost 33 officers to the Great War. It is only right that we take time to remember those who paid the ultimate price and it is great to see this tribute, in partnership with our friends at FARS.
“Senior officers will be out and about at events across the county this weekend to pay our respects and demonstrate the continued importance of remembrance.”
