Young readers in Stone are being encouraged to discover more of what their local library has to offer through a new Staffordshire website and campaign.
The Staffordshire Libraries Kids Zone brings together activities, events, reading support and information for children in one colourful online space. The website also includes details about Reading Well for Children, which offers books chosen to help young readers understand and manage their health and wellbeing.
Five cartoon characters created by young people have been introduced as part of the campaign.
More than 300 entries were submitted by children aged between nine and 17 through schools, libraries and online.
The winning characters are Reggie the Monster, who enjoys funny books, Matilda, who is curious and passionate about facts, McKenzie, a young volunteer who discovers the characters in the library, Sparkle the Mouse, who enjoys magical stories, and Rami the Owl, who is eager to share his knowledge.
Life sized cardboard cutouts of the characters will tour libraries across Staffordshire, while smaller versions will be displayed in the children’s area of every county council library, including Stone Library on the High Street.
Hayley Coles, Deputy Leader of Staffordshire County Council and Cabinet Member for Communities and Culture, said
“The characters have all been designed by young readers, for young readers, and look great. Together, they represent the wide range of reading experiences available through Staffordshire Libraries, from humour and adventure to facts and learning. The creativity shown has been fantastic.
“Libraries play such an important role in inspiring children, and I can’t wait to see many more visiting the website and their local library. The timing is also great as the Summer Reading Challenge is underway and getting more children into the libraries and borrowing books.”
