Firefighters have recorded their own version of the Sugababes hit Push The Button to remind people to test their smoke alarms regularly.

Members of Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service have rewritten the lyrics to the number one hit and have even created a video (above), which was partly filmed at their Stone headquarters.

The song is the main feature of the Push The Button campaign, which is launched on Thursday 21st October. Nine out of 10 households have a smoke alarm fitted – but figures show that seven out of 10 never test them.

Stone firefighter Jamie Richards, aged 21, stars in the video. He said: “The video is a good way to put a bit of fun behind our message. We all enjoyed taking part and everyone at the station has been walking around singing it.”

Firefighters across the county will be out and about on Thursday promoting the new campaign. Residents can sign up to the Push The Button Pledge here to receive a weekly reminder to check your smoke alarm.

Chief fire officer Peter Dartford said: “We are seeing an increasing number of fires where smoke alarms are fitted but aren’t working as they should be. We hope people will enjoy watching the video but also listen to the words and realise how important our message is.”
