Wyrley 1 – Stone Old Alleynians 1

Looking for their fifth win in succession the Old Alleynians were held to a draw by Wyrley in an entertaining game on a perfect afternoon for football last weekend.

The Old Boys took the game to Wyrley early on and had an early chance to take the lead through Adam Tomkinson, but he could only manage to mishit his shot when presented with a difficult chance at the far post. A very good cross-field ball by Jack Thorley then picked out Tomkinson and his powerful shot on target was brilliantly tipped for a corner by the home keeper. Tomkinson then put Nick Buckley clear just in the opponents half but he was overtaken and tackled just as he was about to shoot. Ed Sandy put in a good last-ditch tackle to prevent the hosts taking the lead.

A 25 yard looping shot looked like finding the top corner only for the agile Dan Hulme to brilliantly tip the ball onto the crossbar to keep the Old Boys level. Wyrley had a spell of pressure coming upto half-time which was relieved with a Sam Wilson header, which just cleared the bar.

In the second half Thorley ramaging forward just beat the far post before Hulme again made a great save, tipping a long range speculative shot around the post. Wyrley were now bossing the midfield and the Alleynians had an escape when a poor Hulme goal-kick was hammered back towards an empty net but the ball drifted wide at the last moment. Buckley shot straight at the keeper as the ball pinged around the Wyrley area before the hosts took the lead after forcing a succession of corners. The ball was eventually headed home by newly introduced, Adam Brough, with 10mins left.

The Old Alleynians then forced the pace and after Thorley had gone close, it was Ollie Davies with some trickery on the left before crossing low for the versatile Matt Newman to guide in the equalizer. The visitors conceded a free-kick on the edge of the penalty area, deep in injury time and Hulme again came to the rescue by tipping a low shot through the wall for a corner.
