Mayor’s monthly blog

Stone’s new mayor Cllr Jill Piggott will be writing a monthly post for A Little Bit of Stone to keep us all up to date on what she gets up to during her year in office!

Cllr Piggott – who took on the chains of office in May from outgoing mayor Mike Shaw – certainly had a busy start, with lots of Stone Festival duties. She’ll be raising money for three organisations – Stone Stroke Club, Kathryn House Hospice and Oaktree Farm Rural Project.

Sunday 2/6/13

My second week as Stone Town Mayor, I was asked to attend the start of Stone festival week, I attended the raft race at Darlaston, then on to Westbridge Park to welcome the raft racers home. There were 17 rafts that started and all arrived back safely. Then on to the dog show I was asked to judge a retriever class, this was a first for me. Gave out prizes to the winners. Back in the car up to Yarnfield to watch the finals of the under 13’s football competition, it was great to see the talent these youngsters have. Well done to all that took part. All received medals and the winning team took home a trophy.

Monday 3/6/13

I started the steeple race and dog derby with a closed umbrella (this I was told is a tradition of the festival), all winners received a medal well done to them all.

Then we went off to Walton Community Centre to listen to a talk from Stone in Bloom, it was interesting to hear what was achieved by the team last year and what they are hoping to achieve this year. All sounds good and good luck to them.

Tuesday 4/6/13

Attended the U3A open day event it was great to see all the classes on offer, I watched some of the taster sessions which included Tai-Chi – Dancing etc. In the evening I was invited to attend the AGM at Kibblestone Camp.

Wednesday 5/6/13

Attended Douglas Macmillan Hospice charity event at Keele Hall, guest speaker was Jackie Maulton who was the inspiration for DCI Tennyson in Prime Suspect – very interesting!

In the evening I attended the festival heritage walk, we started off in Airdale Road, on to Coppice Mill through bluebell wood and through Oulton, Phil Leason gave great history facts. Great evening and 69 walkers attended.

Friday 7/6/13

Party in the Park night on Westbridge, great night entertained by Stone Rooftop Studio, Monkey Fingers and The Rolling Stones tribute band.

Saturday 8/6/13

Festival day and what a day the sun shone, the floats were all dressed and the parade was amazing, we drove down in a open top Bentley (what a beautiful car) , I have never seen so many people lining the street down to Westbridge Park. Blazing Saddles gave a great show, we spoke to many of the stall holders, the Mayor of Stafford and myself even had a go at ringing the bells. A great day.

Sunday 9/6/13

Attended the under 9’s cricket competition at Little Stoke cricket ground, presented the medals and a trophy to the winning team.

In the afternoon we attended the Bowls competition at Stonefeild park, watched the final match it was very close, the winners and runners up were presented with medals and a cup for the winners.

In the evening we attended St Michael’s Church for the closing end to festival week, it was a lovely service lots of hymns sung and we heard songs from St Michael’s School children.

I would like to say a personal thank you to John Sayer and all of his team for making the festival week great fun to take part and also to watch, all the events were professionally organised and it was a honour to be asked to join in all week, and the sun was with us all week.

Monday 10/6/13

Cllr Margaret Goodall and Walton 1st brownies invited me to unveil the nature board by the anglers’ car park on Crown Meadow, the board is well situated and gives good information.

Thursday 13/6/13

Presented a bouquet of flowers and chocolates to a lady called Agnus who lives at Joules Court. She was celebrating her 90th birthday. Very warmly welcomed by all of the residents.

Saturday 15/6/13

Visited the Quakers exhibition that was held in Stone’s Market Square, they held a three-day event from Friday to Sunday. It was interesting to read what the Quakers did in war time all over the world – and still do.
