Stone now has the cheapest petrol in our 12 mile fuel search

Drivers of petrol cars looking for the cheapest place to fill up may no longer need to leave Stone, after a price cut at Darlaston put the town at the top of our 12 mile fuel search.

Our second full week of fuel tracking ended with standard E10 petrol at Stone Services, Darlaston priced at 167.9p a litre.

Among current prices in A Little Bit of Stone’s tracker, which covers forecourts within a 12 mile straight line radius of Stone, nothing else was cheaper at the end of Wednesday 30 September.

The next lowest was Jacks Service Station at 169.7p, while several forecourts were at 169.9p.

Three of those were in Stone, Morrisons, Fairway Esso and Fillybrook BP.Stone Petrol and Diesel Prices

That means four of Stone’s five forecourts ended the week with petrol at 169.9p or below.

Darlaston drops its price

Darlaston’s move came on Wednesday, when its petrol price dropped by 2p from 169.9p to 167.9p.

It had started the week at 168.9p before briefly rising by 1p.

The final reduction left it 1p cheaper than at the beginning of our reporting week and, more importantly for drivers comparing where to fill up, cheaper than every other current petrol price in our search area.

It is a notable change from our first weekly review.

At the end of Wednesday 23 September, Darlaston was Stone’s cheapest petrol station at 168.9p, but Asda Wolstanton was cheaper at 167.7p.

By this Wednesday, Asda Wolstanton had risen to 170.7p while Darlaston had fallen to 167.9p.

The national picture provides another comparison. The RAC Foundation reported an average UK petrol price of 174.7p a litre on Wednesday.

At 167.9p, Darlaston was therefore 6.8p a litre below that national average.

For 55 litres, Darlaston’s price works out at around £92.35. Buying the same amount at 174.7p would cost around £96.09, a difference of £3.74.

Stone petrol prices at the end of the week

The prices recorded at the five Stone forecourts at the end of Wednesday were:

The difference between the cheapest and most expensive petrol in Stone was therefore 7p a litre.

On a 55 litre purchase, that is £3.85 between Darlaston and Walton Shell.

Perhaps more strikingly, petrol barely moved at most Stone stations during the week. Darlaston was the only one of the five to finish at a different price from where it started.

Diesel is still cheaper outside Stone

For diesel drivers, the picture remains different.

Darlaston also finished as Stone’s cheapest diesel forecourt at 195.9p a litre. Fairway, Fillybrook and Morrisons were all at 197.9p, while Walton Shell was 198.9p.

But the cheapest current standard diesel in our wider search was 189.9p, available at a number of Tesco and Sainsbury’s forecourts in Stoke on Trent and Newcastle under Lyme.

That puts a 6p gap between Darlaston and the lowest diesel price in the wider area, equivalent to £3.30 on 55 litres.

The gap has, however, narrowed since our first weekly review.

Last Wednesday, Stone’s cheapest diesel was 194.9p at Morrisons, while five forecourts elsewhere in our search were charging 185.9p. That 9p difference equated to £4.95 on 55 litres.

Prices at those cheaper supermarkets have since risen.

Morrisons Stone moved in the other direction too, with diesel increasing three times during the week to finish at 197.9p, 3p higher than it started.

Fairway reduced its diesel price by 1p to 197.9p.

Darlaston moved from 195.9p to 196.9p and then 197.9p before dropping by 2p on Wednesday, finishing back at 195.9p.

All five Stone diesel prices nevertheless remained below £2 a litre at the end of Wednesday, on the same day the RAC Foundation said the UK average diesel price had moved above £2.

Why checking before filling up can pay

Two weeks of tracking are already showing how quickly the cheapest option can change.

Last week, the data showed clear savings were available by travelling outside Stone for diesel, while the petrol difference was relatively small.

Seven days later, Stone itself had the cheapest current petrol price anywhere within the area we monitor.

For our price comparisons, we treat a price as stale when it has not been updated for more than 31 days. Those records are not included when identifying the cheapest current options.

Prices can change at any time, so motorists should check the live A Little Bit of Stone petrol and diesel price tracker before setting off. Each Stone forecourt also has its own price history, allowing drivers to see when its petrol and diesel prices have changed.

Our weekly analysis covers Thursday 24 to Wednesday 30 September 2026.
