Morrisons and Fairway Esso were jointly cheapest at 167.7p a litre at the end of Wednesday 14 October, followed by Fillybrook BP and Stone Services at Darlaston at 167.9p.

Prices fell at all five Stone forecourts between Thursday 8 and Wednesday 14 October when comparing the beginning and end of the week.

Diesel also became cheaper at four local filling stations, although Walton Shell moved in the opposite direction and briefly crossed the £2 a litre mark before dropping back below it.

Morrisons and Fairway recorded the biggest reductions over the week, both falling from 169.9p to 167.7p.

Fillybrook dropped by 2p to 167.9p, while Darlaston reduced its price by 1p to the same level.

Walton Shell’s end of week price was 1p lower than a week earlier, although that does not tell the whole story. Its standard petrol initially increased from 173.9p to 175.9p on Thursday 8 October, before dropping to 172.9p on Monday 12 October.

The difference between Stone’s cheapest and most expensive standard petrol at the end of the week was therefore 5.2p a litre.

On 55 litres, that is a difference of £2.86.

Stone occupies the four cheapest petrol positions

The reductions have strengthened Stone’s position against the wider area covered by our tracker.

Morrisons and Fairway were jointly cheapest in our current 12 mile comparison at 167.7p, with Darlaston and Fillybrook immediately behind at 167.9p.

The next cheapest current standard petrol outside Stone was Sainsbury’s Stoke on Trent at 168.9p.

That puts the two cheapest Stone forecourts 1.2p a litre below the next lowest price elsewhere in the search, a difference of 66p on 55 litres.

It is a change from last week, when Darlaston alone held the cheapest position at 168.9p.

Looking further back, petrol prices have now broadly returned to their mid September levels at several Stone forecourts.

Morrisons and Fairway, for example, were both charging 167.9p on 15 September and ended this week slightly below that at 167.7p.

Four Stone forecourts reduced their standard diesel prices.

Darlaston recorded the biggest overall fall, dropping from 197.9p to 194.9p by the end of the week.

Its reductions came in stages. The price moved to 196.9p on Sunday, 195.9p on Monday and 194.9p on Tuesday.

Morrisons and Fairway both finished at 195.7p, while Fillybrook fell to 195.9p.

Walton Shell moved differently.

Its diesel increased from 198.9p to 200.9p on Friday 9 October, taking the pump price above £2 a litre.

It returned below that threshold on Monday 12 October, falling to 199.9p, where it remained at the end of Wednesday.

The movements mean the gap between Stone’s cheapest and most expensive standard diesel has widened considerably.

A week ago there was only 1p between the five local forecourts. There is now a 5p difference between Darlaston at 194.9p and Walton at 199.9p.

That is worth £2.75 on 55 litres.

Stone closes some of the diesel gap

Diesel remains cheaper outside Stone, but the difference has narrowed over the past week.

Asda Wolstanton had the cheapest current standard diesel in our wider search at 190.7p a litre.

That is 4.2p below Darlaston’s 194.9p, equivalent to £2.31 on 55 litres before taking the cost of travelling to another filling station into account.

Last week the corresponding gap was 6.2p a litre.

The longer term picture is also different from petrol.

While standard petrol has broadly returned to its mid September levels, diesel remains more expensive at most Stone forecourts.

On 15 September, Morrisons, Fairway and Fillybrook were all at 191.9p a litre.

By 14 October, Morrisons and Fairway were 3.8p higher at 195.7p, while Fillybrook was 4p higher at 195.9p.

Darlaston was 193.9p in mid September and is now 194.9p.

How we track Stone’s fuel prices

A Little Bit of Stone checks for fuel price changes every 30 minutes.

This allows us to record when prices move during the week rather than relying solely on a single weekly snapshot.

The prices in this analysis show the position at the end of Wednesday 14 October, with the weekly comparisons covering Thursday 8 October to Wednesday 14 October 2026.

Prices can change at any time, so motorists should check the latest figures before travelling specifically for fuel.

Fuel prices now available through Google Maps

Drivers have another way to compare local fuel prices after Google Maps began displaying near real time petrol and diesel prices in the UK on Thursday 8 October.

The prices come from the government’s Fuel Finder scheme, which requires filling stations to report price changes within 30 minutes.

Fuel Finder data is also used by a number of other apps and comparison services, while A Little Bit of Stone uses the data to provide our own local tracking, price history and weekly analysis for Stone and the surrounding area.

The government says retailers registered with Fuel Finder account for 99% of fuel sold on UK roads.
