Driver jailed after police pursuit through Stone town centre

A man has been jailed after crashing into a police vehicle and driving the wrong way along Stone High Street to evade arrest.

At around 6pm on Tuesday 19 August, officers from Staffordshire Police’s major and organised proactive team stopped a Volkswagen Golf on Redhill Road, Stone. The car, driven by 26-year-old Oliver Reice Jones from Newcastle-under-Lyme, rammed a police vehicle before speeding off towards the town centre.

Witnesses reported the Golf travelling the wrong way along High Street, narrowly missing pedestrians and a passing bus. It was later found abandoned nearby in Regent Street.

Just two days later, on Thursday 21 August, officers traced Jones as a passenger in a black Land Rover Defender on a pub car park in Derby. The vehicle was monitored as it crossed back into Staffordshire and stopped on the A50 in Stoke, where Jones was arrested with support from the road crime team.

Jones was sentenced to one year and three months in prison at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court on Monday 3 November after pleading guilty to driving a motor vehicle dangerously.

Staffordshire Police said the incident highlighted the risks officers face on duty and thanked the public for their cooperation during the pursuit.
